Gambler scoops £585k from late winner

A lucky punter landed £585,143.24 from an 85p bet thanks to Glen Johnson's 87th-minute winner for Liverpool at Chelsea on Sunday.

The 41-year-old gambler - who has chosen to remained anonymous - bet just one euro on his 19-match accumulator, and watched Saturday's football results come in with an increasing state of excitement as the first 18 matches all went his way.

That left the Sunday afternoon match between the Reds and the Blues to decide whether his 683,738-1 gamble would come in.

And unsurprisingly, Liverpool have gained a lifelong fan thanks to the win: "He wasn't a Liverpool fan before, he tells us he is now!" said William Hill spokesman Graham Sharpe, adding that the amazing punt was a new record at the end of a great weekend for gamblers.

"We cannot recall any punter winning either this much on an accumulator, or landing such stratospheric odds." Sharpe added.

Ronaldo gives Bosnia fans the finger

First, the Bosnians greeted Ronaldo at the airport with a serenade of "Messi, Messi!" chants and he ignored them.

Now, during a Portugal training session, they aimed their lasers at his eyes from perches on surrounding buildings and instead of ignoring it, he responded by giving them the finger.

Gary Neville is a scouser

Liverpool's public enemy number one Gary Neville - the man who once said he "can't stand Liverpool" - is actually a scouser himself. The former Manchester United and England defender, now a TV pundit, only discovered his family ties to Merseyside when appearing on a Sky TV game show, A League of Their Own, which is to be aired on Friday evening.

The programme's researchers investigated Neville's family history for the programme, discovering that two of his great, great, great grandparents were from Liverpool.

This revelation clearly hit Neville hard - and no wonder, considering that he once said, "I can't stand Liverpool, I can't stand Liverpool people, I can't stand anything to do with them." He responded by uttering a rather naughty word, after which he was presented with a Liverpool shirt bearing his name by the programme's host - but the Red Devils legend refused to hold the shirt up for the camera.
