Galinsky's CL Preview: AS Roma (ITA) v Shakhtar Donetsk (UKR)

The last of this week’s 1st Knockout Round 1st leg matches takes place in Rome as Serie A strugglers AS Roma welcome Ukrainian champions (ughhhh) Shakhtar Donetsk. Donetsk won the league by 6 points ahead of Dynamo Kyiv but have not played a competitive match since November and will need to shake of any rustiness before taking on Totti, Boriello, Vucinic, De Rossi, and co. Roma had a solid Champions league campaign, finishing second to German giants Bayern Munich, while Shakhtar stunned Europe with a fantastic Group Stage effort finishing 1st ahead of Arsenal, highlighted by their 2-1 victory over the Gunners where former Arsenal man Eduardo scored the winner.

Roma should be wary of this Shakhtar side. Led by Croatia captain Darijo Srna, a player whom Chelsea have been hovering around, Brazilians Luiz Adriano and newly capped Jadson, and Andriy Pyatov in goal, the Miners are a serious threat and should not be taken lightly.

Prediction: AS Roma 2-1 Shakhtar Donetsk
