Owen Coyle is set to win the £2.25m race for David Wheater, futher fueling speculation that Gary Cahill might be on his way out to join current champions Chelsea.
The Bolton boss has outbid rivals Wolves for the Middlesbrough centre-back, who is poised for talks and likely to be taken out of Tony Mowbray’s FA Cup squad today.
Wheater would have to fight for his place in a Wanderers side where Coyle wants competition at the back after releasing Andy O’Brien to join Leeds.
Home-grown hero Wheater is being sold by Boro as they do not want to lose him for a small sum when his deal runs out at the end of the season.
